Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers, before you reach out.
-
No. Any consultant, in admissions or elsewhere, who guarantees a specific outcome should be a red flag, not a selling point. Final decisions are always made by the school, program, or organization on the other end, not by us. What we can promise is the same rigor Dr. Chan brought to reading thousands of files himself: an honest, insider’s read on where you stand, and a real plan to put your best case forward.
-
With a free consultation, a short, no-cost conversation for us to meet, for you to ask questions, and for both of us to be honest about whether this is the right fit. No pressure, no commitment. From there, we decide together what level of support makes sense.
-
Yes, of course. Whatever is discussed, whether it’s about an application, a career transition, or a psychiatric concern, stays between us.
-
No. We’ll push you hard to sharpen your writing, and we’ll tell you plainly when something isn’t working, but the words need to be yours. An application that doesn’t sound like the person who wrote it tends to fall apart under questioning, whether that’s an interview, a follow-up question, or just living up to it later.

Pricing is published directly on the College Admissions, Medical School Admissions, Physician Residency Application, and Attending Physician & Executive Leadership Coaching pages, since those services break down into clear, comparable packages.
For Healthcare & Academic Institutional Consulting, Integrative Psychiatry, and Sports Psychiatry, scope and needs vary too much person to person or organization to organization for a fixed price to make sense, so pricing for those is discussed directly, starting with your free consultation.
-
The free consultation comes first for everyone, a short, no-cost conversation to meet, ask questions, and confirm we’re a good fit, with no obligation to continue.
From there, The Assessment covers the first two steps of the Dr. Chan Illuminate Program, Discover and Diagnose, a focused, honest evaluation of where you stand today. The Full Program covers all five steps, start to finish. Which of the two makes sense, if either, is usually clear by the end of the free consultation.
-
Currently, Utah and Virginia, though as of now Dr. Chan is only actively seeing patients in Utah. We’re in the process of expanding active clinical practice to additional states, if you’re located elsewhere, reach out and we can let you know if your state is next.
-
For psychiatric care specifically, clinical services are restricted by licensure, currently Utah, with Virginia licensure in place as Dr. Chan expands active practice there.
Admissions consulting, career coaching, executive coaching, institutional consulting, and speaking engagements are not clinical services and are provided nationally, regardless of where you’re located.
-
No, this practice does not accept insurance directly. It’s a deliberate choice, working outside insurance networks means your care is never shaped by what an insurance company will or won’t approve.
Upon request, we provide a superbill you can submit to your own insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
-
A superbill is an itemized receipt, including diagnosis and procedure codes, that you submit yourself to your insurance company if your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits.
Reimbursement isn’t guaranteed and varies by plan, so we’d encourage you to check your specific out-of-network benefits before your first visit.
-
Yes. For psychiatric care specifically, confidentiality is a legal and ethical obligation, not just a courtesy. For admissions and career consulting, the same standard applies: your materials, your conversations, and your situation stay between us.
-
Everyone. The work isn’t about only taking on people who are already a sure thing, it’s about helping each person present the strongest, most honest version of their actual candidacy, whatever level that starts at.
-
Yes. College Admissions support isn’t limited to future pre-med students, it’s for any student working toward the undergraduate institution that’s the right fit for them, whatever they plan to study.
-
Yes. The Dr. Chan Illuminate Program is built around the same underlying pattern, being true to your story, backing it up, and presenting it clearly to the people deciding your future, and that pattern applies just as well to law school, business school, PA and NP programs, PhD programs, and other graduate and professional programs.

-
Earlier is generally better, especially for college and medical school admissions, where strategic groundwork laid a year or more in advance tends to outperform a rushed senior-year sprint.
That said, we also work with people much closer to a deadline. The free consultation will give you an honest read on your specific timeline.
-
We genuinely value face-to-face time, especially for care based here in Utah, but most appointments, for both clinical and consulting work, can be done over Zoom, and many clients find that more practical given schedules and distance.
We’ll talk through what makes sense for your specific situation during your free consultation.
